The red fortress was built by the Moorish rulers of the Emirate of Granada, Al Andalus, in the 14th century.

Only a small part of the once luxurious city founded by Abd Al-Rahman III in 936 is visible today. The city was short-lived. In the 11th century it was pillaged and plundered by Berbers, after the fall of the caliphate.
